What the Frak T-Shirt

Aug 8, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: T-Shirts

I think my favorite thing about Busted Tees is that they don’t automatically assume that some shirts shouldn’t be made for women, too.  You can get any design for men or women.  That means that if you’re a female Battlestar Galactica fan, you can get your hands one one of these cool What the Frak T-Shirts.

As to whether you’ll be able to get away with wearing it to school or work…who knows.  But a What the Frak shirt seems infinitely less offensive (to me,  anyway) than seeing Carol in accounting’s ample bosom overflowing from those awful shirts she’s been wearing ever since her divorce…

Fluffy & Luxurious Gray Shag Rug

Jul 1, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

I first saw shag carpeting when I was about 14.  I was visiting a friend’s house and they had the thickest, most exotic carpeting I’ve ever seen.  We laid down on the floor to watch television and I was in love.

Although I’m not going to cover my entire house in shag carpeting, I WOULD like to have a nice, fluffy shag rug to enjoy when I step out of bed onto the otherwise cold wooden floor.  Or maybe to keep under my reading chair to make things especially homey.

This gray shug rug is totally gorgeous - a little pricey, perhaps, but very nice.   What do you think?  I like that it’s more of a charcoal color than plain old gray, too.

Acne Scar Treatment

Jun 21, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: Cosmetics

I had a pretty significant acne problem throughout most of my teens and almost all of my 20s.  It’s only now that I’m 27 that I’ve managed to stop *most* of the acne…but the scars are still there.

So, I made it my New Year’s resoluton to figure out what I can do about the scars/residual pock marks (barring  major surgery and the chance for MORE scars).  After much reading and a bit of experimentation, I’ve arrived at a routine that is definitely helping to clear up my face.

  • Drink more water.  This is SOOO crucial and often overlooked, but hydration from the inside is just as important as hydration from the outside.
  • Get more sleep.  Your body needs it to repair. 8+ hours whenever possible.
  • HD Scar Cream.  I initially tried Mederma and I couldn’t see any results, then I moved to a pure vitamin E oil and it made me feel kind of greasy and gross.  Cocoa butter was also on my list, but it made me break out like crazy.  HD Scar Cream is not the only good scar cream on the market, but it has worked pretty well for me and I’m definitely starting to see some fading.  You can get a free (pay S&H) trial to see if it works okay on your skin.  We’re all different so it’s lucky that you can experiment without spending too much.

My results so far have been a lot better than I expected.  I may still want laser resurfacing or maybe just a peel at some point, but by using gentler methods first, I’m hoping I’ll ultimately get better results with other methods, too (and they definitely won’t have to be so severe).

Has anyone else had any issues with acne scars in the past?  I know they can be super tough since they’re often older scars, but I’d love to hear about any successful methods you guys have used! :)

How to Grow Longer Eyelashes

May 12, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: Cosmetics

My little sister has always had issues with her eyelashes being a lot less substantial than she would like, but I never really knew what advice to give her to get longer (or thicker) eyelashes until I came across Lilash.  I don’t know why, but I just assumed that mascara was the only line of defense for making eyelashes longer.

If you think about it, though, it’s kind of silly to think there’s no way to get longer eyelashes.  Diet and overall health definitely factor into hair growth, and men who are bald can often restore their hair through treatment or dietary changes, so why wouldn’t there be something to help you grow longer eyelashes?

Anyway, I happened upon Lilash entirely by accident this week and I thought I’d just do a quick writeup because it looks like a really great product.  I know what I’ll be getting my sister when her birthday comes around in a couple months.  The before/after photo looked great:

So - my question to you, readers, is this: Have you tried Lilash?  What were the results?  Let me know in the comments!  Or, if you want to be our human guinea pig, click here and get your own!

Getting Away From Design Public

May 1, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: Lifestyle

I like Design Public, but sometimes I just want to break away and see something new - but in the same style.  I feel like everyone I know has a loft or condo outfitted with Design Public furniture and accessories, so it’s good to get away from that once in a while.

My latest obsession is Chiasso.  I like the sleek look of their pieces and the fact that their sales are pretty awesome.  Don’t get me wrong - I won’t be stopping my Design Public catalogs anytime soon - but Chiasso has definitely found a way into my heart.  Some of my favorite pieces are below, and you can click the picture to check out more.

Modern Coat Racks: Surprisingly Contemporary Styles

Apr 18, 2009 Author: whatimnot | Filed under: decor

I’ve never thought of coat racks as being sexy. In fact, I always thought of them as decidedly unsexy, what with them standing around all covered in coats that definitely don’t match the decor.

That’s why I was pleasantly surprised by these modern coat racks and coat hooks over at Chiasso. Take a look and leave a comment to let me know which is your favorite if you get a chance. Mine is the Jaxx Coat Rack.

Jaxx Contemporary Coat Rack
Jaxx Coat Rack - All of these are gorgeous, contemporary coat racks, but I love the Jaxx coat rack because it reminds me of being a little kid and playing jacks.

Metro Modern Coat rack
The Metro Modern Coat Rack is a cute alternative to the Jaxx coat rack, and I love the umbrella holder.

Teepee Lakota Coat Rack
The Lakota Coat Rack - I’m not sure why this isn’t called the “Teepee Coat Rack”, but regardless of what they call it, it’s kind of cool. One of my biggest pet peeves about coat racks is that they fall over easily if you don’t balance the weight (or if you have kids around), so this looks like a much sturdier alternative to some of the others.

And finally,if you’re more of a coat hook person than a coat rack person, either of these would be awesome:

Flip Modern Coat Hooks
The Flip Coat Hook - Simple, understated, and super cute.

J Flexx Hooks Coat Hooks
The J Flex Coat Hooks - Incredibly simple, understated, and easy to forget. Use it for bulky enough coats and I bet they’ll look like they’re floating independently on the wall.

My Ode to ThinkGeek

Apr 11, 2009 Author: whatimnot | Filed under: Gadgets

Dear ThinkGeek,

I’ve decided that we should go steady. I’ve toyed around with other geek websites, but it’s very clear that you’re the one for me. To show you just how much you mean to me, I’ve shamelessly modified a poem just for you…

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

Ahh, screw this. If I were a poet, I wouldn’t be shopping at ThinkGeek. I’m not sure what I’d be doing exactly - maybe sitting in coffee shops with a Moleskine while trying to look mournful and wise at the same time?

Instead, I’m hanging out at home browsing your Flux Capacitor replicas, your extreme caffeine products, and your hilarious geek t-shirts.

Any chance you could sell me a social life, too?

Wall Ambient Fireplace Designs

Apr 8, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: decor

Coming from a small and traditional town, I always thought of fireplaces as these enormous, built into the wall features that have to either be constructed along with the house or added at a cost of many thousands of dollars.

Apparently, that’s no longer the case.  In fact, you don’t even need a chimney anymore.  These modern wall “ambient fireplaces” give you the ambience and warmth of a traditional fireplace without the need for smoke ventilation, gas lines, chimneys, or dirty logs.  They run on bio-ethanol fuel, so it’s safe for use indoors.

My personal favorite is probably the “Wave Ambient Fireplace“, but I like them all.  Which one would you buy?  Note: you can click the pictures to go the original retailer and view more images.

British Phone Booth Cabinet

Apr 7, 2009 Author: whatimnot | Filed under: decor

I’ve seen a lot of tiny, cheap versions of British Phone Booth Cabinets, but this one is actually very nice.  At $750, it’s a little pricy, but it would look really neat in a lot of different rooms.

The interior shelves are adjustable, and it’s also lit from the inside so you can highlight the contents if you so desire.   You can get it here at SkyMall if you like it.

I’ll admit, I’m not the most Earth-friendly girl that ever lived. I make way too much trash, I use beauty products containing who-knows-what kind of chemicals, and I often drive when I should be walking. Still, when I find ways to change my life that are both beneficial to the planet and my lifestyle, I try to take them.

After a recent visit to my grandmother’s house, I’ve been seriously considering a rotary clothesline. In case you’re not sure what that is, refer to the picture below. I helped my grandma take in her towels this weekend and they smelled amazing. Not only did she not pay to run her dryer, but her towels ended up smelling like fresh air - and not the perfume-y, manufactured fresh air that I get with my dryer sheets.

You can get them at this link, and the three-arm models start at $132. Four arm models are a little more, but if you do a lot of laundry, it’s probably worth it.

Rotary Clothesline Dryer

I’m not saying I’ll be hanging my thongs out to dry any time soon, but I think I could definitely use a rotary clothesline to save money in electricity and dryer wear and tear, plus I’ll be getting ultra-fresh clothing that’s just a little bit better for the environment.
