Unusual & Unconventional Gift Ideas
Ever since I lived in a really urban neighborhood, I’ve been sold on the benefits of messenger bags. Unless you need to carry a ton of weight, or you’re planning on hiking, the messenger bag is a perfectly convenient choice for transporting your stuff. You can throw it over your shoulder and everything you might need is accessible without the need to stop and set it down to search.
These Dakine Slimline Women’s Messenger Bags are an especially cute and affordable backpack alternative. In general, Dakine makes great bags, but these are especially attractive with their more feminine colors and patterns. The fact that you can get a whole Dakine messenger bag for less than the cost of a Coach wallet or wristlet is just a bonus.

Despite the fact that I don’t make it out of town nearly as much as I’d like to, I still have three sets of brightly colored luggage. So far, I’ve acquired a hot pink Diane von Furstenberg luggage set, a generic lime green luggage set (that was too cute and too cheap to pass up), and a colorful striped luggage set I picked up at Target some time ago.
Even still, I find myself drawn to this bright purple luggage set from Leisure Woodbridge. Given the sub-$100 price tag, I’m actually surprised that it’s an entire 5-piece set. Quite a bargain - which isn’t helping with my willpower. If you’re as crazy as I am, click on through and get yourself this Purple Leisure Woodbridge Luggage Set. When you’re done, come back here and tell me about it so I can live vicariously through your purchases!
If I were to buy a dog today, it would be a toss-up between a wiener dog and a Saint Bernard. I realize there’s a massive difference there - it’s not like trying to decide between a Shih Tzu and a Lhasa Apso - but I love them both. Of course, it might not be a good idea to have both, as I could see the Saint Bernard repeatedly crushing the poor wiener dog.
Perhaps I could just get the Saint Bernard and then get my wiener dog fix with this cute Plaid Wiener Dog Bag. At $46.99, it costs less than a round of shots (whether you’re talking about the wiener dog or the Saint Bernard). Even better, the bag won’t poop on the floor when it’s too cold or wet to go outside.
In grade school, I was a huge nerd. At any given time, my little backpack would be stuffed with books, pens, pencils, protractors, and the like. Unfortunately, little kids’ backpacks aren’t made to stand up to that sort of thing. I can remember more than one incident where my backpack burst in public and everything fell out. I could have used something a little stronger…
If you’ve ever tried to open one of those Tyvek bags that’s been sealed shut, you know just how strong they are. While scissors can make quick work of them, they’ve virtually impossible to rip or tear. Some brilliant soul realized that the strength could be put to good use in bag form, and thus we have the Tyvek Market Bags.
Uncommon Goods is carrying these Tyvek bags for $65-85, and given the fact that they are waterproof and practically indestructible with normal use, I’d say it’s worth it. Plus, they’ve super-cute and unique. I bet they’re a great conversation starter when people notice the weird-looking Tyvek fibers.
I’ve been trying to get my significant other to upgrade to a cooler wallet for 6 years now. Completely immune to my charms, he continues to carry the same old boring black leather wallet. So unfortunately, I’m pretty sure that he wouldn’t go for this awesome Stainless Steel Wallet. I’m making this post for those of you who are more fortunate - those of you whose boyfriends are open to stylish changes in their lives, or those of you who want your own stainless steel wallet to carry in your purse.
Uncommon Goods has the one below for $75-85, depending on whether you want the wallet or the credit card holder. Take a look:
It may seem a little nerdy, but I think solar-powered bags are pretty cool. In fact, I would proudly carry this Solar Powered Messenger Bag, secure in the knowledge that my gadgets would be charged as long I had sunlight. I’m sure it’s a great conversation starter, too, since they’re still fairly rare.
If the Messenger Bag isn’t your style, they also have a Solar Powered Backpack, which is probably a little better on your back, especially if you carry heavy loads. The backpack is $230 and the messenger bag is $240.
